About Francois Leguat Giant Tortoise & Cave Reserve
Welcome to our reserve, where you can have the unique experience of discovering what Rodrigues was like 300 years ago, before the island was colonised. Since then, all of the native forest of Rodrigues has disappeared and many species of plants and animals have become extinct while many others are still threatened, making Rodrigues one most environmentally devastated ecosystems in the world. This 20-hectare nature reserve, which until recently was almost entirely over-run with introduced plants, is an ongoing conservation project, working on re-wilding the lowland savanah of this area; planting shrubs and trees that once grew here and reintroducing key animal species to recreate the lost links between flora and fauna that make up this unique ecosystem.
As you follow the 2km-long through the reserve, surrounded by the emerging forest and some very rare plants, you will be able to imagine yourself back in time, with the luxuriant greenery a stark contrast to the rest of the island, a reminder of man's destructive impact on his environment. you can stroll amongst giant tortoises, which were once present in large numbers, see the rare Rodrigues fruit bat and take a guided tour of the magnificent caves, unique to this area of the island.

- Flight cancellation or delay: Customers should communicate new arrival & departure time to Service Providers directly
- Failure to communicate in case Airport transfer included, full cancellation fees will be applied, and customers will be charged an additional fee for the new transfer
- Car Rental Reservation: Call MariDeal directly to select date and time and to confirm car availability (subject to availability)
- Minimum age requirement is 18 years old. Original Driver's License must be shown upon arrival
- If a car is rented at a specific time, it should be returned at the same time on the drop-off date. Failure in which will entail Service Provider to charge for an additional day
- In case of an accident or damage, customer will have to pay the insurance excess
- As from 01st October 2021, Covid-19 protocols applicable for Mauritian Citizens or Holder of local Residents' Permit (subject to change as per the Tourism Authority):
- Vaccination card and ID card are compulsory, and must be presented at reception counter upon arrival
- All non-vaccinated guests against Covid-19 will not be allowed access to any activities
- Children under 18 years old are currently exempted from vaccination at this time. They will be allowed to book any activity if accompanied by their parents or a relative (adult) who is fully vaccinated
- ALL locals should be fully vaccinated at least 30 days prior the event - with 2 doses of a Covid-19 vaccine recognised by the Mauritian authorities
- The validated vaccines are: AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca Vaxzeria, Covaxin, Johnson&Johnson (1 dose), Moderna, Pfizer, Sinopharm, Sinovac-CoronaVac, Sputnik V
- If guests do not have the 2 doses or if the PCR test done is positive, the concerned authority will not take overall current bookings
- Reservation: Call service provider directly to select date and time in a minimum of 48 hours in advance (subject to availability)
- For Rodrigues reservation: Call MariDeal to confirm activity availability
- Amendments: Once customers have confirmed a date and time, any amendments will need to be confirmed by Service Provider directly
- Pregnant women are requested to seek medical advice prior to booking any activity
- Activity is still carried out under rain unless safety is compromised. Subject to change in schedule due to weather condition
- Customers are requested to arrive at least 30 mins prior to activity time
- Service Provider reserves the right to limit access to the number of persons in their premises at any point in time
- Covid-19 Lockdown Protocol: If a booking falls within a Lockdown period/Government restriction, customers can request an extension of their voucher according to the validity date (subject to availability)
